Knowledge of Perception - In-field Testing
Project Overview
Using my knowledge of human vision, I recommended using motion instead of only color to indicate to installers that an installed outdoor camera was working. I suggested using motion because it grabs human attention and is easily noticeable.
Goal: A new outdoor security camera was in the final stages of the product development lifecycle. The team wanted to learn how security installers perceived the outdoor camera and ensure no flaws occurred during installation and configuration.
Role: Sole researcher - worked with product management, engineers, industrial designers, and interaction designers
Research Questions:
What pain points do installers have while installing and configuring the camera?
What are installers' impressions of the look and feel of the outdoor security camera?
Method: Observed security installers install and configure and outdoor security camera in customer’s homes, asked questions about their process and customer goal’s for installing the camera, observed and probed on any pain points and delighters
Insights: A visual indicator was difficult to see in outdoor environments and sunlight, so I recommended adding motion (ex., pulse) to the visual indicator to allow installers to determine the camera had been installed properly in sunny outdoor conditions. Motion grabs human attention.
Impact: The insight allowed the design team to implement a solution that allowed installers to remain on the ground after physical installation and have an indicator the camera was installed and working.
